Claude Team vs Pro: what a Team seat adds over a Pro subscription

Claude Pro is a plan for one person. Team is sold by the seat to a group: every seat starts with more usage than Pro, limits are counted per member, and the organization gets central billing, admin tools, shared projects, enterprise search, monthly API credits and no model training on its content by default. If you are a single heavy user, Team is the wrong upgrade; if a few of you already pay for Pro, it is worth a look.

The two plans in one line each

Read from Anthropic's help centre and pricing page on 25 October 2026.

Pro is, in Anthropic's words, "a paid plan for our Claude chat experience", and its help article says it "is about paid Pro plans for individual consumers." Team is "a paid plan for our Claude chat experience built for ambitious teams", sold by the seat. The Team help article lists its own features and then "Everything in Pro".

Prices are not in this guide. Both help articles quote US prices that exclude tax and say pricing varies by region; the current price for your location is at claude.ai/upgrade. Both plans can be billed monthly or annually, according to the pricing page.

Team is for a group, not for one heavy user

This is the first thing to settle, because it rules Team out for a lot of people who search for it.

  • There is a minimum team size. The Team help article sets a minimum number of members for a Team plan, and a maximum seat count above which an organization moves to Enterprise.
  • Each seat is one person. The seats article is blunt: "Each seat on a Team plan is assigned to one named individual, and only that person may use it." Users can't share logins, can't route work through another user's account, and "Unused usage on one seat can't be transferred to another user."
  • Reassigning isn't rotating. Moving a seat is meant for people joining, leaving or changing roles; "It isn't designed for rotating one seat among several active users."

So if you are one person who keeps running out on Pro, Team is the wrong upgrade. Anthropic's own answer in the Pro article is "Our Max plans offer more usage for individuals than Pro plans", or usage credits on Pro. We cover that choice in Claude Max vs Pro.

How the usage limits compare

Anthropic doesn't publish a message count for either plan. What it publishes is how the plans compare with each other:

  • Pro: "Your session-based usage limit will reset every five hours", and "Pro plans also have a weekly usage limit that applies across all models."
  • Team Standard seat: the help article gives it "A larger per-session usage allowance than the Pro plan", plus a weekly limit across all models. The pricing page puts it as "All Claude features, plus more usage than Pro".
  • Team Premium seat: "significantly more usage than Standard seats", aimed at power users; the pricing page states how many times more.
  • Per member, not pooled: "Usage limits on Team plans are per-member, rather than applied to the team as a whole." One member hitting their limit doesn't affect anyone else.

The exact multiples against Pro are written in the Team help article and on the pricing page. On both plans, weekly limits reset at a fixed time assigned to your account, and you can see the next reset in Settings > Usage. Anthropic also reserves the right to limit usage in other ways to manage capacity.

When a limit is reached, both plans can keep going on usage credits billed at API rates. On Pro you switch them on yourself. On Team, an Owner or Primary Owner enables them for the organization, can turn on auto-reload, and can set a monthly spend limit for the whole organization or for individual members.

What Team has that Pro doesn't

Most of the everyday features are on both. The pricing page's comparison tables show Claude Code, Claude in Chrome, Claude for Microsoft 365, Research, memory, connectors, projects and voice mode on Pro and on Team. The differences, read row by row from the same page:

  • Working as a group: project sharing and collaboration, enterprise search across your organization, @Claude, and organization-wide skills deployment are Team features, not Pro ones.
  • Administration: central billing and administration, single sign-on, domain verification, admin controls for remote and local connectors, enterprise deployment of the desktop app, and usage analytics.
  • Spending controls: user and organization level spend controls are listed for Team and not for Pro.
  • Monthly API credits: Team gets pooled credits for the Claude API; Pro gets none (see below).
  • Models: both list Opus, Sonnet and Haiku. For Fable, the Pro column says usage credits, while the Team column lists it on Premium seats as a share of the weekly limit.

Things Team doesn't add: role-based access, SCIM, audit logs, the Compliance API, custom data retention and a HIPAA-ready offering are marked "No" for Team on the pricing page and "Yes" for Enterprise.

Model training and who can see what

The pricing page has a "Model training" row. For Pro it says "Opt-out"; for Team it says "None by default". Anthropic's January announcement of the Team price changes says the same in plain words: "Your data stays private—we don't train Claude on your content by default." If you want to keep Pro and opt out instead, our guide to which AI plans train on your work shows where the switch is.

The trade-off on Team is the organization layer: Owners and Admins manage members, seats and billing. What a Team owner can and can't see of your chats is covered in Can you share an AI subscription?.

API credits: Team yes, Pro no

Anthropic's article on monthly API credits says they are "Available on Max and Team plans, including discounted Team plans. Free, Pro, and Enterprise plans aren't eligible." On Team, "credits for all seats are pooled into one monthly balance", with a per-seat amount for Standard and Premium seats and a monthly cap; one Owner links a Claude Console organization and claims the pool for the whole team.

Two limits on what the credits do: they cover the Claude API, the Console Playground, Managed Agents and the Agent SDK, but "The credits don't apply to" interactive Claude Code or extra usage in Claude, and they "Doesn't roll over" from one billing cycle to the next. The Pro article adds its own reminder: "The Pro plan does not include API usage through the Claude Console." If the API is the reason you are looking at plans at all, see Is the API cheaper than a subscription?.

Where Anthropic's pages disagree

Priority access. The Pro help article lists "Priority access to Claude during high-traffic periods" as a Pro benefit, and the Team article repeats priority access under "Everything in Pro". The pricing page's "Priority access at high traffic times" row says "No" for Pro and "Yes" for Team. We can't tell from Anthropic's pages which one is current for Pro; if it matters to you, treat it as uncertain on Pro and certain on Team.

Context window. The Team help article and the pricing page give different context-window figures for Team, and the pricing page adds that it varies by model. Check the model you plan to use rather than either headline number.

Seats, billing and switching

  • Standard and Premium can be mixed. "Organizations can mix and match seat types", so a team can put its heaviest users on Premium and everyone else on Standard. Only Admins and above can see each user's seat type; members can't see their own anywhere in Claude.
  • Adding is charged now, cutting takes effect later. New seats and Standard-to-Premium upgrades are prorated and charged immediately. Reducing seats, or moving someone from Premium to Standard, takes effect at the next renewal, and "There is no prorated refund at the time you submit this change." Removing a member doesn't reduce the bill on its own; you have to reduce the total seat allocation.
  • Moving from Max to Team ends the Max link for API credits; a Team Owner claims the team's credits once the Team plan has been active for the period set in the credits article.

Cancelling Pro is covered in our cancellation guide, and refund routes in our refund guide.

Which one to pick

This part is our judgement, built on Anthropic's rules above.

  • You are one person: Pro. Team needs more than one member and doesn't let one person use several seats. If Pro runs out, look at Max or usage credits instead.
  • A small group pays for Claude on separate Pro plans: Team is worth comparing. You get central billing, shared projects, enterprise search across your work tools, monthly API credits and no training on your content by default, and every seat starts with more usage than Pro.
  • Only one or two people in the group use Claude heavily: Team with mixed seats, Premium for them and Standard for the rest, rather than Premium for everyone.
  • You need audit logs, SCIM or custom data retention: neither. Those are Enterprise features on the pricing page.

FAQ

What is the difference between Claude Team and Pro?

Pro is a paid plan for one person. Team is sold by the seat to an organization, and each seat belongs to one named member. Anthropic says every Team seat includes more usage than Pro, Premium seats include more than Standard ones, and Team adds central billing and admin, single sign-on, enterprise search, monthly API credits and no model training on your content by default.

Are Claude Team usage limits shared across the team?

No. Anthropic's help centre says usage limits on Team plans are per member, not applied to the team as a whole. When one member reaches their seat's limit, the others keep working, and unused usage can't be moved from one seat to another.

Can I buy Claude Team just for myself?

No. The Team plan has a minimum number of members, and each seat may be used only by the person it is assigned to, so it is not a way to get more usage as a single user. Anthropic points individuals who need more usage than Pro to its Max plans, or to usage credits on Pro.

Does Claude Pro include API credits?

No. Anthropic's article on monthly API credits says they come with Max and Team plans and that Free, Pro and Enterprise plans aren't eligible. On Team, the credits for all seats are pooled into one monthly balance, up to a cap set out in that article.
