Claude Max vs Pro: what the extra $80 to $180 a month buys
Claude Max is Claude Pro with more room in it. Anthropic lists Pro at $20 a month and Max in two tiers, $100 and $200, and names those tiers after what they multiply: Max 5x and Max 20x, meaning five or twenty times Pro's usage per five-hour session. The feature lists are nearly the same. So this is a question about how often you run into Pro's limits, and whether the fix is worth five or ten times the bill.
The prices
Read from Anthropic's pricing page and help centre on 10 October 2026. US dollars.
| Plan | Monthly price | Annual option | Usage per five-hour session |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pro | $20 | $17 a month, $200 billed up front | The baseline |
| Max 5x | $100 | None | 5x Pro |
| Max 20x | $200 | None | 20x Pro |
Three caveats come with those numbers, all Anthropic's own. The pricing page says "Prices shown don’t include applicable tax." The Max help article says its prices "are for web subscriptions only" and that "Mobile pricing may vary depending on your app platform." And the Pro article says monthly pricing varies by region, with some regions showing tax in the price and others adding it at checkout. Go by what the checkout shows you.
Max has no yearly price. The plan table lists the billing cycle as "Monthly and annual" for Pro and "Monthly" for both Max tiers. We go through what the Pro annual discount is worth in annual vs monthly AI plans.
What Max adds to Pro
The Max card on the pricing page opens with "Everything in Pro, plus:" and lists five things:
- "Choose 5x or 20x more usage than Pro"
- "Higher output limits for all tasks"
- "Early access to advanced Claude features"
- "Priority access at high traffic times"
- "$100 to $200/month in API credits to build on the Claude Platform"
The comparison table under the cards shows how short the list of differences is. Claude Code, Research, Projects, Claude in Chrome, Claude for Microsoft 365 and the Opus models are marked Yes for Pro, Max 5x and Max 20x alike. The rows where the columns differ are these:
| Row in Anthropic's table | Pro | Max 5x | Max 20x |
|---|---|---|---|
| Priority access at high traffic times | No | Yes | Yes |
| Monthly API credits | No | $100/month | $200/month |
| Fable | Usage credits | 50% of weekly limits | 50% of weekly limits |
| Billing cycle | Monthly and annual | Monthly | Monthly |
Two notes on that table. First, Anthropic's own pages disagree about priority access: the plan table marks it No for Pro, while the help article for Pro lists "Priority access to Claude during high-traffic periods" among Pro's benefits. We report both and can't tell you which is current. Second, the Fable row is the one place the table separates the plans by model. The cell for Pro reads "Usage credits" and the cells for Max read "50% of weekly limits". Our reading is that on Pro the Fable model is paid for through usage credits on top of the plan, and on Max it can take up to half the weekly allowance; open the "More information" note beside that row on the pricing page before you rely on it.
The API credits only matter if you build things. Pro, according to its help article, "does not include API usage through the Claude Console", and the Max credits are for the Claude Platform, which is the developer side. If you never touch the API, leave them out of the sum. Our API vs subscription guide covers when the API is the cheaper route.
How the limits work on both plans
Pro and Max use the same two-layer system. Anthropic's help centre describes it this way: "Paid plans have two types of usage limits: a session limit that resets every five hours, and weekly limits that reset once every week."
- There is no message count. The pricing page FAQ says how much you can do depends on the length and complexity of your conversations, the model you choose and the features you use, "so there's no fixed message count."
- Everything draws from one pool. Anthropic says usage across claude.ai, Claude Code and Claude Desktop counts towards the same limit. A long coding session in the terminal eats into the chat allowance.
- The weekly reset is fixed per account. Both plan articles say the weekly limit resets at a fixed time each week that is assigned to your account, whatever day you subscribed, and that the next reset time is shown in Settings > Usage.
- Anthropic keeps a free hand. Both articles add that it "may limit your usage in other ways, such as weekly and monthly caps or model and feature usage, at our discretion."
One detail is easy to miss. The help article states the multipliers in terms of the session: Max 5x "includes five times the Pro plan's per-session usage allowance" and Max 20x includes 20 times. It says Max plans also have a weekly usage limit that applies across all models, and gives no multiple for that weekly limit. Don't assume the weekly ceiling scales by the same 5 or 20.
The cheaper fix to try first
Hitting the limit on Pro doesn't force an upgrade. The Pro article says subscribers "can also enable usage credits to continue working with Claude beyond the plan’s included usage limits", and the pricing page FAQ describes the option as turning on usage credits "to keep working at standard API rates." With credits on, Anthropic says, your work continues on credits instead of stopping when you reach a session or weekly limit.
That gives you three positions, not two: Pro alone, Pro with credits for the occasional overflow, and Max. If you run out a few times a month, a month on Pro with credits switched on will show you what the overflow actually costs before you commit to $100.
Upgrading, downgrading and the annual-plan catch
- Upgrades are immediate and prorated. The pricing page FAQ says upgrades take effect right away and unused time on the current plan is credited toward the new one. Moving from Max 5x to Max 20x is charged on a prorated basis for the rest of the billing cycle.
- Annual Pro to Max leaves a credit, not a refund. If the remaining balance on an annual Pro plan is greater than the Max price, Anthropic says you receive a credit to your account that is applied to future subscription costs.
- The billing address has to match. To receive that credit, the billing address used for Max must be the same as on the previous subscription. If it has changed, Anthropic's instruction is to cancel Pro, wait for the end date and then sign up for Max afresh.
- Google Play works differently. There you are charged the full price of the new plan, and the unused value of the old one is converted into extra days.
- Downgrades wait. They take effect at the end of the current billing period, and Anthropic says your chats, projects and files stay with the account on any plan.
- No standing discounts. Both plan articles say Anthropic does not offer standard discounted pricing on paid plans, only occasional limited-time promotions, and that its support team cannot issue one-off discounts or coupons.
Refunds follow the general rule on the pricing page: "Payments are generally non-refundable, except where our Consumer Terms of Service say otherwise or where local law requires it." The routes by platform are in our refund guide.
Which one to pick
This part is our judgement, built on the rules above.
- You rarely or never see the limit message: Pro. Max adds almost nothing you would notice.
- You run out a few times a month: Pro with usage credits turned on, at least for a month, to see the real overflow cost.
- You hit the five-hour limit on most working days, or you live in Claude Code: Max 5x. It is the tier the multiplier was designed for.
- You exhaust Max 5x too: Max 20x, and check Settings > Usage first to see whether it is the session limit or the weekly one that stops you, since Anthropic only states the multiple for the session.
- You are on annual Pro: read the credit and billing-address rules above before you click upgrade.
FAQ
How much more usage does Claude Max give than Pro?
Anthropic's help centre says Max 5x includes five times the Pro plan's per-session usage allowance and Max 20x includes 20 times. The session allowance resets every five hours. Max plans also have a weekly limit; the help article gives no multiple for that one.
Does Claude Max have usage limits?
Yes. Anthropic says the session-based limit resets every five hours and that Max plans also have a weekly usage limit that applies across all models. It adds that it may limit usage in other ways at its discretion.
Can you pay for Claude Max annually?
No. Anthropic's plan table lists the billing cycle as “Monthly and annual” for Pro and “Monthly” for both Max tiers, and the help centre says the Max plan is currently available as a monthly subscription only.
What happens to an annual Pro plan if I upgrade to Max?
Anthropic says that if the remaining balance on the annual Pro plan is greater than the Max price, you receive a credit to your account that is applied to future subscription costs. The billing address on the Max purchase must match the one on the previous subscription.
