Annual vs monthly AI plans: when prepaying a year actually saves money

Not every AI plan has an annual option

The question assumes annual billing is on the table and the only thing left to decide is whether to take it. Anthropic's pricing page, read in September 2026, says otherwise. Its plan table lists the billing cycle for Claude Pro as "Monthly and annual" and for Claude Max as "Monthly" — and the FAQ under it repeats the point, saying annual subscriptions are available for Pro and Team while Max is billed monthly. The plan most likely to be bought by someone using AI hard enough to think about prepaying a year is the one plan you can't prepay.

Anthropic's Enterprise tier runs the opposite way: annual only, with no monthly option. So annual billing turns up at both ends of the range and skips the middle.

Google's consumer page produced the other surprise. In September 2026 it listed Google AI Plus at $4.99/mo, Google AI Pro at $19.99/mo and Google AI Ultra from $99.99/mo, and those monthly figures were the whole story — a search of the rendered page for the word "annual" returned zero matches. We're not saying Google sells no annual plan anywhere. We're saying the page a consumer actually lands on gave them no way to pick one.

What "annual" actually charges you

Two vendors describe the same arrangement from opposite directions, and the framing changes how good it looks.

Anthropic leads with the monthly rate. Claude Pro is $20/month, or, in its own words, $17/month equivalent billed as one upfront payment of $200 for the year. No one is ever charged $17. That figure is the $200 divided by twelve and rounded up, and the $200 leaves your account at once, on day one.

Microsoft leads with the yearly number and puts a Paid yearly / Paid monthly toggle at the top of the page. Microsoft 365 Personal shows as $99.99/year or $9.99/month, with the page itself stating you "Save $19.89 with a yearly plan". Family is $129.99/year or $12.99/month, saving $25.89. Premium — the tier carrying the advanced Copilot chat with extensive usage and the agentic AI features — is $199.99/year or $19.99/month, saving $39.89. The banner across the top reads: save up to 17% when you pay yearly.

Seat-based plans follow the same shape. Claude Team is $25 per seat per month, or $20 per seat billed annually; the premium seat drops from $125 to $100.

The real discount, tier by tier

All figures read off the vendors' own pricing pages in September 2026. Plans and regional pricing change without notice — confirm on the vendor's page before you pay.

Anthropic's page never prints a percentage. It says only that annual plans are designed to cost less than monthly. Do the arithmetic yourself and Claude Pro's $200 against twelve months at $20 comes to $40, or 16.67%. Every Microsoft 365 tier lands within a tenth of a point of that: Personal, Family and Premium all sit at 16.6%. Microsoft is happy to say so on the banner; Anthropic leaves it to you.

Here's the judgement we'd make with those numbers in front of us: 17% is real money and it is not enough to make prepaying the default. Forty dollars a year is a couple of lunches. The thing you give up to get it is the ability to walk away in March, and on a product category that keeps re-pricing and re-packaging itself, that option is worth more than $40 to most people. We'd take annual on the tool you have already used daily for six months, and monthly on everything else.

If you cancel in month three

The cleanest way to think about prepaying has nothing to do with percentages. Divide the annual price by the monthly price and you get the number of months you have to stay before the annual plan has beaten paying month to month.

Claude Pro: $200 ÷ $20 = ten months. Microsoft 365 Personal: $99.99 ÷ $9.99 = just over ten months. The break-even is the same in both places, and it is late in the year. Cancel in month three and you have paid $200 for what would have cost you $60.

Whether any of that comes back depends on the vendor's refund terms, and Anthropic's are specific. Its pricing page says payments are generally non-refundable, except where its Consumer Terms of Service say otherwise or where local law requires it. Two carve-outs follow. Customers outside Europe can raise a request from inside the app under Help, using the "Claude Refund Request" option, with eligibility checked case by case. Customers in Europe can request a refund within the 14-day withdrawal period, again from inside the app. Bought through the App Store? Apple handles that refund. Bought through Google Play? One timing detail is easy to lose and expensive to lose: Anthropic asks you to cancel at least 24 hours before the renewal date for the cancellation to stop the next charge. A calendar reminder set for two days before the anniversary costs nothing. The mechanics for each vendor are in how to cancel AI subscriptions.

Moving the other way is friendlier than we expected. Anthropic credits unused time toward the first annual invoice when you switch from monthly, so the days you've already paid for aren't billed twice, and running the plan monthly for a few months before converting costs you nothing extra for the wait.

Does prepaying protect you from a price rise?

This is the argument we most often see made for annual billing, and no page we read this month supports it. Not one of the three vendor pages stated that prepaying locks your rate for the term.

Microsoft's page actually points the other way. Its footnote reads: "Subscription automatically renews at the regular price and selected term, unless cancelled in Microsoft account." The regular price means whatever that price is on the day it renews. Prepaying buys you twelve months at a known cost. It says nothing we can verify about month thirteen.

Google's page carries a related trap worth a sentence of its own: verified students get Google AI Pro free for a year, and the page says the plan "may automatically renew at the standard monthly price once student status concludes". Free for twelve months, then a possible $19.99 a month landing on a card nobody has checked since the first week of term.

What we could not check: ChatGPT Plus and Perplexity Pro

Being straight about the gap matters more than filling it. ChatGPT Plus and Perplexity Pro are the two subscriptions an article like this most obviously ought to cover, and we have nothing verified to report on either this round.

OpenAI's pricing pages and its help centre all served an automated-traffic challenge page in September 2026 and would not render for us. The same happened at Perplexity's Pro page. That means we could not confirm from the vendors' own pages this month whether either product's listed monthly price still stands, whether an annual option exists, or what the refund terms say — so we're not printing a number for either. Plenty of sites will give you one. Ask where it came from and when.

What you can do in the meantime is apply the ten-month test yourself. Open the vendor's checkout, note the annual total and the monthly rate, divide one by the other, and ask honestly whether you'll still be using this in month eleven. One more thing turned up while we were checking Microsoft. The standalone Copilot Pro product page at microsoft.com now returns a 404, and the consumer Copilot tiers appear inside the Microsoft 365 plans instead. We can tell you the old page is gone and where the Copilot features currently sit on the plan table, but the plan page never says what was migrated into what, and neither can we.
