ChatGPT Go vs Plus: what Plus adds on top of Go
ChatGPT Go is OpenAI's low-cost plan: everything in Free, with more room on images, uploads and data analysis. Plus sits above it and adds the broader model list, priority access at busy times and a longer set of tools. Everyday text chat is unlimited on both Free and Go, so the choice comes down to which of Plus's extras you would actually use, and whether you mind the ads OpenAI says it may test in Go.
The two plans in one line each
Read from OpenAI's help centre and pricing page on 19 October 2026.
Go is, in OpenAI's words, "a low-cost subscription plan that provides expanded access to ChatGPT's most popular features at an affordable price." Plus "includes broader model and tool access than Free." OpenAI's pricing page stacks them: the Plus card opens with everything in Go, and the Go card with everything in the Free plan.
Prices are not in this guide. The Go help article says subscription prices are on the ChatGPT pricing page and that OpenAI may adjust pricing over time; purchases are in US dollars, with local-currency billing in a limited set of countries. Check the pricing page or the checkout in your own country before you work out the sum. Both plans are billed monthly: OpenAI says it does not support annual billing for Go, Plus or Pro.
What Go gives you
The Go help article starts from "Everything included in the Free plan" and adds:
- Higher limits on the busy tools. Image generation, file uploads and advanced data analysis all get more use than on Free.
- Longer memory. OpenAI describes it as a larger context window for more personalised responses.
- Projects, tasks, custom GPTs and Library, "subject to current feature availability and storage limits."
- Unlimited everyday text chats, the same as Free: "Free and Go users both have unlimited everyday text chats." Abuse-prevention safeguards still apply.
- Reasoning, with a ceiling. Go users can use Think on the web and in the mobile app; the help article names the model behind it and says "ChatGPT Go does not include GPT-5.6 Sol." Legacy models such as 4o are not included.
- Voice at Free's level. "Voice mode is included with the same usage limits as the Free tier."
Two caveats are written into the same article: "Some advanced products and higher-tier features may require Plus or another eligible plan", and installing or using some plugins, apps or templates depends on your plan, with "Some capabilities require Plus or higher."
What Plus adds
The Plus help article lists these benefits over Free:
- Priority access during high-traffic periods, with fewer interruptions when demand is high.
- Higher model limits: more messages and broader model options. OpenAI says model availability changes during rollouts, so the model picker on your account is the current list.
- Advanced reasoning access and faster response speeds.
- Expanded features: voice conversations, image generation, file uploads and analysis, and Deep Research tools where available.
The Plus card on OpenAI's pricing page, read on the same day, names what Plus adds on top of Go: advanced reasoning models, higher message and upload quotas, more complex and more accurate image generation, enhanced Deep Research, stronger memory and context, projects, scheduled tasks and custom GPTs, more Codex usage, and early access to new features.
Plus also works with some outside tools. "Eligible Plus subscribers can authorize participating tools to use their included OpenAI allowance through Sign in with ChatGPT." OpenAI notes that connecting a tool draws from the same allowance and does not create a separate one, and that API usage is billed separately on both plans.
How the limits work
Neither plan comes with a published message count in these articles.
- Go: the limits are described relative to Free. Go "includes higher limits for eligible features such as image generation, file uploads, and data analysis", and usage is "subject to plan limits, abuse guardrails, and temporary restrictions during high demand."
- Plus: "Plus subscriptions may include usage limits such as message caps, especially during high demand. These limits may vary based on system conditions."
So the plain answer to "how many images" or "how many messages" is that OpenAI doesn't put a number on either plan here. If you keep running into a limit on Go, the only reliable test is a month on Plus.
Ads and data
The Go help article says "We may start testing ads in ChatGPT Go in the future", and the Go card on the pricing page carries a note that the plan may include ads. The Plus article and the Plus card say nothing similar. If ads would bother you, that is a reason to pay for Plus that has nothing to do with limits.
On training, the two articles say the same thing: OpenAI may use conversations to improve its models, and you can opt out at any time. Our guide to which AI plans train on your work covers where the switch is.
Where OpenAI's pages disagree
The Go help article lists "Access to projects, tasks, custom GPTs, and Library" as part of Go, subject to feature availability and storage limits. The pricing page's Plus card lists projects, scheduled tasks and custom GPTs among the things Plus adds on top of Go. Our reading is that Go gets these features in a more limited form and Plus gets more room in them, but neither page says that in so many words. If one of them is the reason you are buying, check the feature on your own account before you decide.
The model names also move faster than the help centre. The Go article names a GPT-5.6 model for Think, while the pricing page lists GPT-6 among the reasoning models on Plus. The Plus article's own advice applies to both plans: "check the model picker for the options on your account."
Switching between them
- Sign-up: profile icon, then Upgrade Plan, then "Try Go" or "Get Plus".
- Plus to Go: change it under Settings > Account. "Your current plan will remain active until the end of your billing cycle." There is no refund for the rest of the cycle; after that you are charged the Go rate.
- Cancelling either: OpenAI says Go subscriptions are "billed automatically monthly, and can be canceled anytime"; Plus is billed monthly too. The steps for each service are in our cancellation guide, and the refund routes in our refund guide.
Which one to pick
This part is our judgement, built on OpenAI's rules above.
- You mostly chat, and Free's limits on images or uploads are what stop you: Go. Everyday text chat is unlimited on both Free and Go, so Go is paying for the tools around it.
- You want the stronger reasoning models, or you use ChatGPT at peak times for work: Plus. Priority access and the broader model list are Plus features, not Go ones.
- You use Codex, Deep Research or scheduled tasks seriously: Plus. The pricing page puts more Codex usage and enhanced Deep Research on the Plus card.
- You would rather not see ads: Plus, given OpenAI's note about testing ads in Go.
- You are already on Plus and want to save money: try Go only if you can live without the items in the "What Plus adds" list; the switch takes effect at the end of the cycle you have already paid for.

FAQ
What is the difference between ChatGPT Go and Plus?
Go is OpenAI's low-cost plan: everything in Free plus higher limits for eligible features such as image generation, file uploads and data analysis, and longer memory. Plus adds broader model and tool access, higher model limits, priority access during busy periods, faster responses and Deep Research where available. OpenAI's pricing page lists Plus as everything in Go plus more.
Does ChatGPT Go include image generation?
Yes. OpenAI's help centre lists extended access to image generation on Go, with higher limits than Free. The pricing page lists more complex, more accurate image generation as one of the things Plus adds on top of Go.
Does ChatGPT Go have ads?
It may. The Go help article says OpenAI may start testing ads in ChatGPT Go in the future, and the Go card on OpenAI's pricing page notes that the plan may include ads. Neither page says the same about Plus.
Can I switch from ChatGPT Plus to Go?
Yes, under Settings > Account. OpenAI says you will not be refunded: your current plan stays active until the end of the billing cycle, then the account switches to Go and you are charged the Go rate from then on.
