ChatGPT vs Gemini: which one should you pay for?
I've run both for months on the same work. One is the widest do-everything toolbox; the other is the assistant already living inside your Gmail and Docs with room for enormous documents. Here's the task-by-task call.
The verdict up top
Both are excellent all-rounders and the gap is small. Want one app that does the widest range of things — voice, image, data analysis, a huge ecosystem of extras? Pick ChatGPT (9.0). Already living in Gmail and Docs, or routinely working with very large documents? Pick Gemini (8.8). It usually comes down to one question: do you want the deepest toolbox, or the assistant that's already where you work?

Breadth & extras
This is where ChatGPT leads. No competitor packs as many distinct capabilities behind one subscription — voice conversations, image generation, data and file analysis, web browsing, and a huge marketplace of custom tools. For a lot of people that convenience is worth more than an edge in any single area. Gemini counters with plenty of its own extras, but on sheer breadth of features in one app, ChatGPT is still the deepest toolbox. Advantage ChatGPT.
Large documents
Gemini's clearest win. Its context window takes genuinely enormous inputs and answers about the specific passage you asked about instead of drifting into a vague summary. ChatGPT handles big files well too, but for "read all of this and find the part that matters" at real scale, Gemini is the standout. Advantage Gemini.
The mental model: ChatGPT is the deepest toolbox; Gemini is the assistant already sitting inside your Google documents.
Ecosystem fit
If you live in Google, Gemini is hard to beat: it drafts in Docs, summarises in Gmail, pulls from Drive, and leans on Google's own search for current answers. That integration is worth more to a Google user than any standalone feature. ChatGPT is the broadest standalone assistant — it goes anywhere and connects to everything, but it isn't woven into your inbox and files the way Gemini is. Pick by where your work already lives.
Price
A wash at the entry point: both around $20/month for the plan most people want, each with a free tier worth trying and pricier power-user tiers above. Don't let the expensive top tiers factor into a $20-vs-$20 decision. Full numbers are in our AI pricing comparison and the individual ChatGPT and Gemini reviews.

Paying for either from a restricted country
Whichever you choose, checkout can be the real obstacle abroad — a plan not sold in your country, an unfamiliar billing currency, or a declined card. The compliant routes are the same for both: check it's offered in your region, pay with a reputable virtual or prepaid card in a supported currency, and if you use a virtual card, fund it through a licensed source. Our payment guide walks through it country by country.
OKX — one regulated option for funding a card
Only relevant if you've decided to fund a virtual card through a licensed exchange, where OKX legally operates and you've completed identity verification (KYC). Not financial advice; crypto carries risk and isn't available everywhere.

Is ChatGPT or Gemini better?
By our scores, ChatGPT (9.0) edges Gemini (8.8) — but they're close and it depends on the job. ChatGPT for breadth and extras; Gemini for Google users and very large documents.
Is Gemini better than ChatGPT for Google users?
Usually yes. Gemini drafts in Docs, summarises in Gmail and pulls from Drive — if you live in Google, that integration outweighs ChatGPT's wider standalone toolbox.
Which is better for coding?
ChatGPT has a slight edge for most coding help, though both are strong. If you code a lot, pair either with an in-editor tool like GitHub Copilot.
Do they cost the same?
At the entry tier, roughly yes — about $20/month each as of July 2026, both with a free tier. Confirm current pricing on the official sites.
