Google AI Pro vs Ultra: what the extra $80 or $180 a month buys
Google AI Ultra is Google AI Pro with a much bigger allowance and a handful of extras. On Google's US page Pro is $19.99 a month and Ultra comes in two sizes, $99.99 and $199.99, named after what they multiply: five or twenty times Pro's usage limits. Most of the features are shared. So the real question is how often Pro's limits stop you, and whether the extras on the Ultra card are things you would pay for on their own.
The prices
Read from Google's US subscriptions page and help centres on 14 October 2026. US dollars.
| Plan | US monthly price | Gemini app usage |
|---|---|---|
| AI Pro | $19.99 | 4x the standard (no-plan) limits |
| AI Ultra, 5x | $99.99 | 5x AI Pro |
| AI Ultra, 20x | $199.99 | 20x AI Pro |
Ultra is one plan sold at two sizes. The plan card says "Starting at:" above the price and then lists both: "$99.99/ month: 5x higher usage limits vs. AI Pro" and "$199.99 / month: 20x higher usage limits vs. AI Pro". The card opens with "Everything in Google AI Pro and:", so nothing on Pro is taken away when you move up.
These are the prices on the United States version of the page. The page has a region selector, and Google says Pro and Ultra are each available in more than 150 countries, so check your own country's version or the checkout before you work out the sum. The small print on the same page reads "Cancel anytime. No refunds for partial billing periods, except as required by applicable law." The routes for asking anyway are in our refund guide.
How Gemini's usage limits work
Pro and Ultra share one limit system, and Ultra simply gets a bigger allowance. Google's Gemini help centre puts it this way: "Your limit refreshes every 5 hours until you reach your weekly limit."
- There is no fixed message count. The limits are "compute-based", and the help page says they factor in the complexity of your prompt, the models and features you use, and the length of your chat.
- Some requests cost far more than others. Google's own table rates a simple chat as "Very low" and Deep Research and video generation as "High", and adds that "Video generally requires the most usage." Long chats cost more as they grow, because Gemini re-reads the history, which is why Google suggests starting a new chat when you change topic.
- You can see where you are. Gemini warns you when you are close to the limit, and when you reach it the notification says when the limit will refresh. The full picture is under Settings > Usage Limits.
- Hitting the limit doesn't end the chat. "If you have a Google AI subscription and reach your limit, you can continue your conversation with Flash-Lite."
- Google keeps a free hand. "Limits may change without notice, including due to capacity constraints."
One thing the higher tier does not change is how much Gemini can read at once. The help centre lists the context window as "1 million tokens" for "AI Pro & AI Ultra" alike. If your problem is a document that is too long, Ultra will not fix it.
What Ultra adds beyond usage
Reading the two plan cards side by side, most rows on Ultra are the Pro row with a bigger word in front of it. In the Gemini app, Pro gets "Access to our Pro model" and Ultra gets "Highest access to our Pro model"; both cards list the same newest model. The rows where the difference is more than a bigger allowance are these:
| Item | AI Pro | AI Ultra |
|---|---|---|
| Google Flow credits | 1,000 | 10,000 or 25,000 |
| Google Antigravity | Entry rate limits | Higher (5x) or highest (20x) rate limits |
| Jules coding agent | Higher limits | Highest limits |
| Cloud storage | 5 TB | Starting at 20 TB |
| YouTube | Premium Lite | Premium individual plan |
| Google Home Premium | Standard | Advanced |
| Google Cloud credits | $10 a month | $40 a month |
| Project Genie | No | Yes |
Some notes on those rows, all from Google's pages:
- Storage depends on the exact plan. The Google One help pages list "5 TB or 10 TB of storage based on your specific Google AI Pro membership plan" and "20 TB or 30 TB Storage, depending on your specific Google AI Ultra plan". The plan page shows 5 TB for Pro and "starting at 20 TB" for Ultra.
- The YouTube benefit is narrower than it looks. Google says the YouTube Premium individual plan is available in over 40 countries, and that the Premium Lite plan in the Pro bundle won't activate if you already have an equivalent or YouTube Premium subscription.
- Project Genie is the one Ultra-only item. The footnote reads "Only available with a Google AI Ultra plan."
- The Cloud credits are for developers. They come "from Google Developer Program". Antigravity and Jules are developer tools too: Google calls Antigravity "our agentic development platform" and Jules a coding agent "for software developers". If you never build anything, leave all three out of the sum.
Several things are on both plans: Gemini inside Gmail, Docs and other Google apps (Ultra with higher limits there too), the 1 million token context window, and family sharing "with up to five others", which the Google One plan page lists on both plans.
Where Google's pages disagree
Three of Google's pages measure the 5x and 20x figures against Pro. The subscriptions page says "vs. AI Pro", and the Gemini help centre lists AI Ultra as "5x or 20x higher than AI Pro limits depending on your subscription". The Google One help page for Ultra says the same: "5x or 20x usage quota in Gemini and Google Antigravity compared to the Google AI Pro plan."
The Google One plan page puts it differently. Its Ultra card says "up to 20x access* to Gemini", and the asterisk resolves to "In comparison to non-AI subscribers". Pro's card on the same page says "4x access*" against the same baseline. Read literally, that would make Ultra 20x about five times Pro, not twenty. Our reading is that the subscriptions page and both help centres, which agree with each other, describe the plan as sold, but we can't tell you which wording Google will keep. If the difference matters to you, compare Settings > Usage Limits before and after a month on Ultra.
The pages also differ on what AI credits do. The subscriptions page footnote on Gemini app limits says "You can extend your limits by purchasing AI credits." The Google One article on credits names only two places: Pro and Ultra members "can purchase AI credits to get extra usage in Google Flow and Google Antigravity." We report both.
AI credits before an upgrade
If the limit you keep hitting is in Google Flow or Antigravity, Ultra is not the only way out. Google's Pro help page says you can buy AI credits with the Pro plan "which can be used to extend your usage in Google Flow, Google Antigravity, and other products where AI credits are supported." The conditions, from Google One's credits article:
- Not everyone can buy them. Members subscribed through a third party, Pixel Pass or Apple billing are listed as not eligible.
- They can expire. "AI credits may expire after a certain period, as set out when you acquire them."
- Usage varies. "The amount of AI credits used for each feature and model varies." Your balance and history are on the AI credits activity page.
- In a family group, one person holds the wallet. Credits can be shared with the family group, "However, only the plan manager can buy additional AI credits, upgrade, or downgrade memberships."
For Antigravity, Google says credits are "deducted based on standard API pricing for the specific model and complexity of request", and you choose in its settings whether credits kick in automatically when the baseline quota ends. If you only overflow now and then, a month of credits on Pro tells you what that overflow is worth in dollars, which is the number to hold against Ultra's $80 step. Our API vs subscription guide covers the case where paying by usage beats any plan.
Pro or Ultra?
From here on it is our opinion, applied to the rules above.
- You rarely see the limit notice in Gemini: Pro. Ultra adds nothing you would use every day.
- You run out now and then, mostly in Flow or Antigravity: Pro with AI credits, if your billing route allows them.
- The Gemini app cuts you off at the five-hour mark most working days, or you generate a lot of video: Ultra at the 5x size. Video is the heaviest thing on Google's own usage table.
- You exhaust Ultra 5x too: the 20x size, after checking in Settings > Usage Limits which of the two limits, five-hour or weekly, you are actually running into.
- You are mainly after storage or YouTube: price those on their own first. At $80 a month more than Pro, Ultra is an expensive way to buy either.

FAQ
What is the difference between Google AI Pro and Ultra?
Ultra includes everything in Google AI Pro plus more usage and a few extras. On Google's US plan page Pro is $19.99 a month and Ultra starts at $99.99 for 5x Pro's usage limits or $199.99 for 20x. Ultra also lists more Google Flow credits, higher Antigravity and Jules limits, more storage, the full YouTube Premium individual plan instead of Premium Lite, and Project Genie, which is only available with Ultra.
How much higher are Google AI Ultra's usage limits?
Google's Gemini help centre lists AI Ultra as 5x or 20x higher than AI Pro limits depending on your subscription, and AI Pro as 4x higher than standard limits. The Google One plan page instead describes Ultra as up to 20x access compared with non-AI subscribers, so Google's pages do not agree on the baseline.
Does Google AI Pro have usage limits?
Yes. Gemini app limits are compute-based: they factor in the complexity of your prompt, the models and features you use, and the length of your chat. Your limit refreshes every 5 hours until you reach your weekly limit, and a subscriber who reaches the limit can continue the conversation with Flash-Lite.
Can I buy more usage instead of upgrading to Ultra?
Partly. Google AI Pro and Ultra members can purchase AI credits, and Google's help centre says they give extra usage in Google Flow and Google Antigravity. Members subscribed through a third party, Pixel Pass or Apple billing are not eligible to buy them, and only the plan manager can buy credits for a family group.
